Leuna Polyamid faces closure and job losses after failed investor search
The search for an investor for the Leuna Polyamid chemical plant in Saxony-Anhalt has failed, leading to the planned cessation of production by the end of September. The insolvency of the company, which was established in April 2026 as a rescue entity to take over assets from the Belgian group Domo Chemicals, threatens approximately 400 jobs.
Managing Director Martin Naundorf stated that no binding offers were received despite efforts to find a new backer. The company cited several economic pressures for its failure, including drastically increased raw material prices, high natural gas costs, and competition from China.
Following the end of production, the plant will undergo a technical shutdown process lasting 15 to 20 days. Formal insolvency proceedings are expected to begin in early October. The closure also raises concerns regarding the supply of materials and ammonia for other companies within the Leuna chemical park.
