Leverkusen residential building evacuated due to suspected asbestos contamination

An eight-story residential building in Leverkusen has been evacuated following the suspected release of asbestos fibers during renovation work in unoccupied apartments. The contamination, which may have spread to common hallways, prompted emergency services to evacuate approximately 31 to 45 residents and several animals.

To prevent inhalation of the carcinogenic material, the fire department established decontamination zones where residents were required to remove their clothing and undergo cleaning. Following the procedure, individuals were provided with protective suits. While the city assesses the situation, some residents may need to stay in hotels.

Authorities stated that the risk of long-term health consequences for the residents is considered very low, as the exposure level is estimated to be minimal. The city plans to file criminal charges regarding the suspected improper handling of hazardous waste, pending coordination with the public prosecutor's office.
