Levi Bellfield to give DNA sample as CCRC re‑examines 1996 Kent murders
Serial killer Levi Bellfield, already serving life for murders including Milly Dowler, has agreed to provide a DNA sample after claiming responsibility for the 1996 killings of Lin Russell, 45, and her six‑year‑old daughter Megan in Kent. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is reopening the case, which originally led to the conviction of Michael Stone, who has maintained his innocence and is serving three life sentences.
The CCRC previously secured a fresh DNA sample from Stone and now plans to take a sample from Bellfield, though no date has been set. The murders shocked the nation when the bodies were discovered in Goodnestone on 9 July 1996, shortly after the family had moved from Wales. Bellfield’s confession could prompt a further appeal for Stone.
Authorities emphasise that the review is ongoing, and the new DNA evidence may determine whether the original convictions stand.
