Levica calls for public housing fund as Macedonia's home prices soar

In a parliamentary debate, the Levica party lodged four amendments to the budget rebalancing aimed at establishing a state housing fund and constructing social flats in Skopje, Veles, Štip and Kočani. The party says the housing market has become dominated by speculative investors, with house prices doubling and rents reaching unaffordable levels for many young families. Levica criticises the ruling DP MNE coalition for defending the existing model, accusing it of failing to intervene despite two years of inaction on housing policy. The opposition argues that state intervention, rent regulation and anti‑speculation taxes are needed to restore the right to housing, while the government has dismissed these proposals as market interference.
