Levica party protests mining concession in Probishtip
The Levica political party has accused the DPMNE party of attempting to suppress debate regarding the future of the Plavica – Crn Vrv mining zone in Probishtip. During an extraordinary session of the Probishtip Municipal Council, Levica councilor Stefan Mitevski raised concerns over a 30-year mining concession.
The concession for gold, copper, and silver extraction is held by Genesis Resources Limited, an Australian company that owns 100% of the formal concessionaire. Mitevski has called for the Plavica area to be entirely removed as a mining zone from the Draft Spatial Plan through 2040. He further proposed that instead of new exploitation, the state should prioritize the full remediation of existing tailings and historical mining pollution.
Levica claims that Mayor Toni Tonevski of DPMNE tried to silence the discussion to avoid addressing the impact of foreign capital controlling local mineral resources and the potential environmental consequences for the citizens of Probishtip.
