Levi’s Stadium finances spark debate in Santa Clara City Council
The Santa Clara City Council recently held discussions regarding the long-term financial viability and maintenance of Levi’s Stadium. Council Member Kelly Cox expressed concern over a “financial cliff,” noting that while tens of millions of dollars are budgeted for improvements, only a fraction of the work is being completed due to rising inflation and project costs.
Concerns were also raised regarding the future of revenue flowing to the city’s general fund, with projections suggesting these funds may dry up, leaving only performance rent as a contributor. Cox called for increased city oversight and greater accountability from the stadium manager, the Forty-Niners Management Company.
Despite these concerns, City Finance Director Kenn Lee described the current year as “strong,” reporting that $10.5 million flowed to the general fund, with revenues reaching 102% of projections and costs remaining at 93% of expectations. While major projects like LED upgrades and a new boiler were completed, officials noted that overall maintenance investment is not keeping pace with stadium wear.
