Lewis Hamilton advocates for African F1 return and global freedoms
Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton has called for increased global attention to the struggles for freedom in Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and Syria. Speaking ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin, the Ferrari driver expressed hope for peace in these regions and emphasized the need for better education regarding African history in British schools.
Hamilton also addressed the planned return of Formula 1 to Africa, specifically noting the prospect of a race in Rwanda in the early 2030s. He described the continent as having rich cultures and resources that deserve international recognition. Hamilton noted that his long-standing advocacy for an African race might influence his decision to delay retirement, stating he feels ‘forced’ to stay in the sport longer to see this dream realized.
While Hamilton welcomed the move, human rights organizations have criticized the selection of Rwanda. Amnesty International has characterized the agreement as a potential ‘sportswashing’ opportunity that allows the Rwandan government to improve its image despite allegations of human rights abuses and political repression.
