Lewis Hamilton criticizes F1 2026 engine regulations

Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris have criticized the 2026 powertrain regulations following the Mexico City Grand Prix. The drivers expressed frustration with a specific provision that allows the FIA to limit electrical power output at high speeds, a phenomenon known as clipping.

Hamilton described the current engine profile settings as the worst in the sport's history, stating that the speed limits at the end of straights prevent overtaking and negate the slipstream effect. He argued that the restrictions make it nearly impossible to attack even when drafting, leading to a lack of close racing.

Max Verstappen also noted that the clipping effect kills overtaking opportunities into Turn 1. Hamilton suggested that the FIA must review these restrictions to ensure competitive racing, noting that the current rules prevent drivers from exceeding certain speeds even when they have the capacity to do so.
