Lewis Hamilton: Reflections on career setbacks and 2021 Abu Dhabi GP

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reflected on the aftermath of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, detailing how he monitored Lewis Hamilton’s well-being following the loss of the title to Max Verstappen. Wolff noted that Hamilton sought distance from the sport immediately after the race, spending time in the Caribbean to practice sports like kitesurfing. Wolff emphasized the strong bond between the driver and the team, stating that they have supported each other through many difficult moments.

In a separate reflection on his career, Lewis Hamilton discussed a period of significant uncertainty during his rise through the junior ranks. Before his Formula 1 debut, Hamilton faced a major setback when his contract with McLaren ended in 2005 while he was competing in Formula 3. Hamilton recalled his intense desire to reach the top tier of racing, noting that he used to call McLaren officials weekly to request Formula 1 testing opportunities.
