Sepang F1 return marked by Verstappen win and FIA software errors

The return of Formula 1 to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, serving as a replacement for the Bahrain Grand Prix, was marked by both sporting milestones and significant technical and logistical challenges. Max Verstappen secured victory, marking the first win for the Red Bull Ford power unit, while Lewis Hamilton managed a podium finish despite early difficulties with tire choice in wet conditions.

The event faced a major disruption during the formation lap due to an FIA software error. The glitch, related to electrical power limits in wet conditions, caused several cars, including those of Verstappen and Hamilton, to lose power and nearly stall. The FIA has announced a full investigation into the software failure.

Logistically, the race faced criticism regarding infrastructure. Fans reported heavy traffic congestion, insufficient shuttle services, and difficulties accessing the circuit. Additionally, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem stated that for Malaysia to secure a permanent spot on the F1 calendar, the government must present a robust five-year business plan covering costs, logistics, and spectator management. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that discussions regarding a permanent return are ongoing.
