Urban trees face severe damage from heat and drought in Germany and Austria

Extreme heat and drought conditions have caused significant damage to urban greenery and historical landscapes across several regions. In Graz, Austria, the Schlosspark Eggenberg is facing severe stress, with officials expressing concern that the impact on ancient and exotic trees may not be fully understood until 2027.

In Germany, several cities are reporting similar struggles. Trier has noted that many trees in its municipal registry have suffered such heavy damage that they are likely to die. Cities including Mainz, Koblenz, and Kaiserslautern are also seeing the effects of the dry summer. While some trees use leaf drop as a survival mechanism to reduce evaporation, many young trees are expected to fail to sprout in the coming spring. In Ludwigshafen, authorities anticipate that while some trees may recover over winter, many others will remain weakened and eventually die due to the cumulative effects of climate change.
