Lewiston, Maine faces surge in youth gun violence

Lewiston, Maine, is experiencing a significant rise in gun-related incidents, with police reporting 35 cases this year, 22 of which involve juveniles. Police Chief Carly Conley has identified the trend as one of the city’s most serious public safety challenges.

Local reports indicate frustration among residents and the District Attorney regarding the juvenile justice system, noting that many teenagers are released shortly after arrest. In response, city officials have approved $200,000 in additional police overtime funding to increase patrols and enforcement.

Mayor Carl Sheline has emphasized that while increased resources aim to deter perpetrators, parental involvement and accountability remain essential to addressing the crisis.
