Lezíria do Tejo continues recovery seven months after Storm Kristin

Seven months after Storm Kristin hit the Lezíria do Tejo region in Portugal, recovery efforts for infrastructure, housing, and agriculture remain ongoing. João Leite, president of the Intermunicipal Community of Lezíria do Tejo and Mayor of Santarém, stated that while the most critical emergency phase has passed, structural reconstruction is still in progress. He noted that the storm caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, farms, roads, and public heritage.

Regarding financial aid, 546 applications for housing support totaling over 3.1 million euros were submitted, with the vast majority of processes already validated or decided by regional authorities. Leite described the government's response as generally positive, noting that funds are reaching families.

However, local agricultural representatives express concerns regarding the pace of recovery. Luís Seabra, president of the Association of Farmers of Ribatejo, described the region as “very fragile” and criticized a lack of coordination and clear information. He reported that many producers remain in a state of uncertainty, waiting for definitive answers on damage assessments and support amounts, noting that some agricultural damages only became fully apparent during subsequent farming cycles.
