LF Energy research finds open source delivers higher value for energy grids
Research conducted by LF Energy and LF Research indicates that open source software could deliver two to five times more value for energy grids compared to traditional software procurement methods. The findings were presented at the LF Energy Summit Europe in Berlin.
The study introduces the LF Energy Open Source Benefit-Cost Framework, a new methodology designed to help grid operators, regulators, and industry stakeholders quantify the economic, strategic, and social impacts of open source adoption. Unlike conventional procurement analyses that focus primarily on near-term acquisition and operating costs, this framework evaluates strategies across four dimensions: total cost of ownership, risk exposure, strategic value, and societal impact.
By incorporating long-term factors such as interoperability, customization, community co-development, and digital sovereignty, the framework aims to support more resilient and adaptable energy infrastructure. This approach is increasingly critical as the industry manages the growth of renewable energy and the expanding electrical loads required by AI data centers.
