LG Chem unveils PEM electrode cutting rare‑metal use and doubling lifespan

LG Chem announced a new polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water‑electrolysis electrode that markedly lowers the amount of scarce catalyst metals such as iridium and platinum required for green‑hydrogen production. The redesign reduces precious‑metal volume while maintaining electrochemical performance.

The company also reports that the electrode architecture doubles the operational lifespan of the core component under industrial conditions, decreasing maintenance downtime and stack‑replacement costs. By addressing both material cost and durability, the breakthrough aims to improve the economic viability of large‑scale renewable hydrogen projects for decarbonising heavy industry, shipping and chemical manufacturing.
