LG Display unveils FLiPP maskless OLED manufacturing technology
LG Display has unveiled FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning), a proprietary OLED manufacturing technology designed to replace the conventional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) process. The technology was officially introduced at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2026 in Busan.
By utilizing photolithography and precision UV light etching to pattern RGB pixels instead of using metal masks, FLiPP addresses several industry limitations, including high manufacturing costs, mask sagging in large-scale production, and resolution constraints. LG Display claims the method improves the aperture ratio by approximately 55%, which leads to a 1.6x increase in brightness, a 2.4x extension in panel lifespan, and a 13% reduction in power consumption compared to FMM-based panels.
LG Display is the first to implement this maskless process on 8.5th-generation mother glass, which can increase glass utilization efficiency by up to 64%. The company plans to initially deploy FLiPP for IT products like tablets and monitors before expanding the technology to wearable devices and large-screen televisions.
