LG Display unveils FLiPP technology for brighter, more efficient OLED panels

LG Display has unveiled FLiPP (FMM-Less Innovative Pixel Patterning), a new OLED production technology, at the IMID 2026 event in Busan, South Korea. This method aims to replace the traditional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) process used to position organic materials on glass substrates.

Traditional FMM methods face challenges with larger panels, as the metal masks can sag under their own weight, leading to misalignment and color mixing. FLiPP utilizes a photolithography process—similar to semiconductor manufacturing—where RGB materials are layered sequentially and patterned using precision ultraviolet light.

LG Display claims this technology increases the pixel aperture ratio by approximately 55 percent. This improvement allows for displays that are 1.6 times brighter and have a lifespan 2.4 times longer than FMM-based panels. Additionally, the technology is expected to reduce power consumption by 13 percent and enable more efficient manufacturing of larger-sized panels.
