LG Electronics begins mass production of 5G R16 telematics for European automaker
LG Electronics has commenced mass production and delivery of its next-generation 5G Release 16 (R16) smart telematics solution to a premium European automaker. This marks the first deployment of the R16-based solution in a production vehicle in Europe.
The solution integrates a communications module with up to 12 antennas into a single hardware unit. This design aims to reduce signal loss, wiring complexity, and weight while improving space efficiency and cost-effectiveness. By consolidating components, the system allows manufacturers to eliminate external shark-fin antennas, supporting smoother vehicle aesthetics.
Built to support the era of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) and AI-Defined Vehicles (AIDV), the technology provides ultra-reliable, low-latency communication (URLLC). It supports critical functions such as Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, and high-capacity data transmission for autonomous driving. The solution has undergone stability testing in diverse environments, including high-temperature desert conditions.
