LG Electronics to create sea forest using new marine material
LG Electronics has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Gyeongsangnam-do, and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to restore marine ecosystems. The initiative aims to create a sea forest covering approximately 1.5 square kilometers in the waters of Deokmyeong-ri, Goseong-gun, between 2026 and 2029.
The project will utilize ‘LG Marine Balance’, a functional new material that releases mineral ions upon contact with water. This material provides a steady supply of nutrients essential for the growth of seaweed and halophytes. The technology is highly customizable, allowing for precise control over the amount and speed of mineral release through various forms such as hard beads or flat chips.
LG Electronics is expanding its functional material production to drive B2B growth. The company operates an annual production line of approximately 4,500 tons at its LG Smart Park in Changwon and has recently established an additional 2,000-ton capacity line in Haiphong, Vietnam, to meet global demand.
