LG Energy Solution expands global battery research contest

LG Energy Solution has announced the launch of the ‘Battery Innovation Contest (BIC) 2026’, marking the 10th anniversary of its global research competition program. To accelerate technological competitiveness, the company is expanding the scope of research topics to its largest scale ever.

The program invites universities and research institutions worldwide to submit projects. LG Energy Solution will select candidates based on technical maturity and commercialization potential, providing research funding and direct involvement from its own researchers. Key research areas include cell state diagnostic technologies, safety mechanism identification, battery management systems (BMS), and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Since its inception in 2017, the BIC has supported approximately 50 research projects. Successful initiatives are often transitioned into the Frontier Research Laboratory (FRL), where they receive additional funding and personnel. Previous achievements include patent filings for BMS physical models and research on all-solid-state batteries published in the journal ‘Science’.
