LG Energy Solution begins production at Michigan battery plant
LG Energy Solution has officially commenced production at its new facility in Lansing, Michigan, completing its network of five major energy storage system (ESS) production hubs in North America. The 226-acre plant represents an investment of over $2 billion and is designed as a dual-purpose manufacturing site.
The facility will produce lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage solutions and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NCM) cells for electric vehicles. The LFP cells are intended for grid storage and AI data centers, with major clients including Tesla for its Megapack 3, as well as DTE Energy and Consumers Energy. The NCM cells will be supplied to Toyota for use in the 2027 Highlander EV, which is assembled in Georgetown, Kentucky.
At full capacity, the Lansing plant is expected to produce up to 35 GWh of battery cells annually and employ approximately 1,700 people. This launch is part of a broader strategic rebalancing by LG Energy Solution to expand its presence in the ESS market, aiming to secure more than 50 GWh of LFP production capacity across North America by the end of this year.
