LG Energy Solution predicts solid-state batteries will hit smartphones before EVs

LG Energy Solution (LGES) has indicated that solid-state battery technology is likely to reach the consumer market via smartphones and small electronics approximately ten years before it becomes viable for electric vehicles (EVs).

Speaking at a new facility in Michigan, Robert Lee, President of LGES North America, explained that while solid-state cells offer superior energy density, safety, and charging speeds, the primary obstacle is the difficulty of scaling up manufacturing for large-format cells required for automotive use. Small-format cells are much easier to produce at scale, making them suitable for mobile devices and drones first.

Automakers are currently testing various stages of the technology. Mercedes-Benz has utilized semi-solid state prototypes from Factorial Energy to achieve ranges of approximately 1,200 kilometers. BMW and Stellantis are also conducting tests with solid and semi-solid state prototypes. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers including BYD, CATL, and Geely are pursuing an aggressive timeline, aiming for pilot production by 2027 and broader implementation toward 2030.
