LG Energy Solution Shifts US Plants to LFP Batteries, Ganfeng Launches Fund
LG Energy Solution has begun converting part of the production capacity at five U.S. electric‑vehicle battery plants to manufacture lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) cells for stationary energy‑storage systems. Executive vice‑president and North America president Bob Lee said the shift reflects faster growth in the U.S. storage market than in EV demand. The affected plants, each with roughly 40 GWh annual capacity, are moving pouch‑cell lines from high‑nickel NCM chemistry to LFP and are also developing prismatic formats. Lee cited a $1.6 billion agreement with DTE Energy to supply LFP‑based battery systems for eight Michigan projects totaling 1.5 GW and 6 GWh.
Separately, Ganfeng Lithium’s subsidiary Ganfeng LiEnergy will invest 100 million yuan as a limited partner in the newly created Gongqingcheng Ganfeng Tiantai Venture Capital Partnership, a fund of 218 million yuan that will target high‑quality projects in the lithium‑battery value chain, next‑generation battery technologies and frontier applications. Company chairman Li Liangbin and president Wang Xiaoshen are also investing personally, underscoring the fund’s strategic focus on the battery industry.
