LG Innotek begins autonomous driving data collection in South Korea

LG Innotek has partnered with US-based software company Applied Intuition to begin collecting real-world autonomous driving data on South Korean roads. The initiative focuses on gathering sensory data to enhance the performance of cameras, radar, and LiDAR through advanced sensor fusion technology.

Data collection vehicles will initially operate in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province. LG Innotek plans to expand its domestic fleet to approximately 20 vehicles for data collection and software development by 2028. The collected information, which includes road conditions, object locations, and weather changes, will be integrated with digital twin simulations to optimize sensor accuracy and system reliability.

The project specifically targets ‘edge cases’—difficult driving scenarios such as heavy rain, strong backlighting at tunnel exits, and irregular lane markings at construction sites. Following the Korean deployment, Applied Intuition plans to run vehicles equipped with LG Innotek sensing modules in the United States, Europe, and Japan to refine products across diverse global environments. The company noted that all personal information, such as pedestrian faces and license plates, will be anonymized during the process.
