LG Uplus and Yonsei University verify AI-RAN network switching technology

LG Uplus and Yonsei University have successfully verified network switching technology within an Artificial Intelligence Radio Access Network (AI-RAN) environment. This verification ensures that connectivity remains stable even when devices transition between different network types.

AI-RAN is a next-generation wireless technology that uses AI to analyze and optimize network status in real-time, predicting potential quality degradation to manage resources efficiently. This technology is considered a core component for the upcoming 6G era. The testing specifically addressed the needs of ‘Physical AI’—technologies like robots and drones that perceive and interact with their physical surroundings.

The verification process involved linking LG Uplus’s 5G network with Yonsei University’s NVIDIA GPU-based AI-RAN testbed. Researchers demonstrated that devices, such as industrial mobile terminals from Point Mobile, could automatically select the optimal network and maintain a continuous connection when moving between the AI-RAN testbed and the standard 5G network.

Moving forward, LG Uplus and Yonsei University plan to provide a testing environment for small and medium-sized enterprises to validate AI-RAN technologies and potentially serve as a testbed for international expansion. The two institutions will also continue joint research on network technologies required for next-generation AI-based services.
