LG Uplus develops technology to narrow mountain rescue search areas by 99%
LG Uplus has successfully demonstrated a new technology designed to narrow the search area for missing persons in mountainous regions by approximately 99%. Working with radio wave analysis firm Solbit System, the company conducted a pilot test at Unjangsan Mountain in Jinan County, North Jeolla Province.
The Intelligent Search Support System (iSAR) utilizes base station radio coverage, antenna direction, and time-specific mobile phone connection records to estimate locations. In the demonstration, the system reduced the estimated search area from a 706.86 square kilometer radius—based on the last known base station connection—to just 4.13 square kilometers. This capability is particularly vital in scenarios where GPS signals are unavailable or the mobile device has been powered off.
LG Uplus and Solbit System plan to conduct further testing to verify the accuracy and utility of the technology, with the goal of integrating it into the search and rescue systems used by emergency response agencies.
