LG Uplus to automate SIM security updates for millions

LG Uplus is launching an automatic update process for USIM and eSIM cards starting October 22 to strengthen the security of International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) numbers. This move accelerates a rollout originally scheduled for November.

As of October 20, approximately 6.59 million subscribers—representing 38.4% of the target customer base—have already completed the security update or received a free SIM replacement. The new automated system targets customers capable of remote updates, including individual, corporate, MVNO, and eSIM users. However, customers residing overseas are excluded as they cannot access the domestic network.

Updates will occur on weekdays between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. LG Uplus will notify customers via text message and KakaoTalk at least three times prior to the scheduled update. Customers who wish to postpone the process can do so through the U+one app, the company website, or the SIM consultation center, with postponements available until the end of the year.

Users with older SIM cards, smartwatches, or certain tablets that do not support remote updates can still receive free replacements at physical stores. The company also plans to utilize temporary hubs, courier services, and mobile stores to assist elderly customers and those in remote areas.
