Taipei police raid on gay bar sparks discrimination controversy

Taipei police conducted a raid on the Commander D BDSM-themed gay bar in the Wanhua district, leading to the arrest of the owner and the detention of 51 customers for questioning. The operation, carried out under a search warrant for suspected offences against public morality, has sparked significant controversy regarding police conduct and human rights.

Witnesses and advocacy groups reported instances of procedural irregularities, including officers allegedly refusing to show the search warrant and forcing patrons to squat without being allowed to speak or use phones. Most notably, officers were accused of making discriminatory and derogatory remarks toward a person with a disability. Following an internal review of body camera footage, the Wanhua Precinct confirmed that four officers were disciplined with reprimands for inappropriate language, and the investigating team leader received a demerit for failing to intervene.

In response, approximately 100 members of the LGBTQ+ community protested at the police station. Ten human rights and gender equality organizations issued a joint statement demanding an independent investigation, the preservation of all enforcement records, and the establishment of specific enforcement guidelines for LGBTQ+ and gender-friendly venues. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an expressed regret over the incident and has ordered a strict review of the police department's actions.
