LGBTQ+ visibility and Gen Z engagement rise ahead of 2026 midterms

New research highlights shifting political engagement and visibility trends among LGBTQ+ populations ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Data from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation indicates that 85 percent of LGBTQ+ adults are currently somewhat or very open about their identity, with one-third reporting increased openness over the last two years. This trend is particularly pronounced among younger adults aged 18 to 34.

Simultaneously, a study by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law focused on LGBTQ+ Gen Z voters found that this demographic is highly politically engaged. Approximately 73.6 percent of LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ Gen Z respondents expressed a definite intention to vote in the 2026 midterms. The study noted that while Gen Z shares broader economic concerns like inflation and housing costs with their peers, LGBTQ+ Gen Z respondents show stronger party preferences and a higher likelihood of participating in civic activities.

Regarding candidate selection, over 76 percent of queer Gen Z respondents stated they would prioritize a candidate who shares their values over one who shares a similar identity. The HRC emphasized that visibility is viewed by many in the community as a tool to build public support for equal rights and protections.
