LGBTQIA+ history and identity highlighted for Pride Month

Various organizations are highlighting the history and diverse identities within the LGBTQIA+ community in observance of Pride Month.

Educational resources include curated reading lists that feature fiction and nonfiction works addressing the experiences, achievements, and research of queer individuals. One highlighted work, ‘Nothing Wanting: Asexuality and the Matter of Absence’ by K. J. Cerankowski, explores asexuality through an experimental lens, moving beyond simple identity to theorize silence and emptiness.

Discussions also focus on the evolution of the LGBTQIA+ acronym. This includes the historical origins of terms such as lesbian, which traces back to ancient Greece and the 17th century, and the reclamation of the word ‘gay’ by activists in the 1960s. The expansion of the acronym to include ‘Q’ for queer or questioning, as well as the addition of ‘IA+’, reflects the growing recognition of diverse sexual identities and gender expressions.
