Lhasa Half Marathon attracts 4,000 runners in high-altitude race
The 2026 Lhasa Half Marathon took place on August 23, drawing 4,000 runners from various parts of China to the Himalayan region. The event featured a 21.0975-kilometer course with an average altitude of approximately 3,650 meters.
The race route included scenic views of the Lhasa River, prominent city buildings, and historical sites, concluding at the Potala Palace Square. Due to its unique features, including the high-altitude urban track and local ethnic characteristics, the event has officially challenged a Guinness World Record for the ‘largest-scale half marathon held at the highest altitude’.
Organizers stated the event aims to promote national fitness strategies and integrate sports, culture, tourism, and commerce to enhance the city's identity and cultural tourism.
