Li Auto CEO Li Xiang predicts end of SUV size race

Li Auto CEO Li Xiang has addressed the industry trend of increasing flagship SUV dimensions, stating that the current “size arms race” is a transitional phase driven by legacy internal combustion engine (ICE) thinking.

Li argues that pure electric architectures provide inherent advantages that negate the need for larger vehicle footprints. Because electric motors are compact and batteries are integrated into the chassis, manufacturers can optimize cabin space, shorten front overhangs, and create flat floors without increasing the external shell size. He noted that excessive width can lead to user anxiety regarding parking and maneuvering.

In anticipation of the Li i9 launch on September 16, Li highlighted that the new flagship SUV focuses on space efficiency, low drag, and enhanced handling rather than sheer size. The i9 is expected to feature advanced technologies such as steer-by-wire and rear-wheel steering to improve maneuverability in urban environments, aiming to provide the agility of a compact SUV despite its 5.2-meter length.
