Li-S Energy delivers lithium-sulfur cells to US Army for testing

Australian battery developer Li-S Energy has delivered its first batch of lithium-sulfur battery cells to the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) C5ISR Center for independent testing. The cells have been received at the Aberdeen Proving Ground for evaluation.

Lithium-sulfur technology is being developed as a lighter alternative to conventional lithium-ion cells. Li-S Energy reports that its cells are approaching twice the energy density of standard lithium-ion, which could enable unmanned aerial systems, ground robotics, and autonomous platforms to achieve longer flight distances, extended operation times, and increased payload capacities.

The testing process serves as a potential gateway into formal US Army procurement. Successful evaluation could influence programs involving soldier-worn equipment and various autonomous platforms. The company’s technology utilizes lithium-sulfur chemistry combined with boron nitride nanotubes and its proprietary Li-Nanomesh technology to improve performance while maintaining weight advantages.
