Liam Lawson describes complex F1 energy deployment algorithms

Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson has described the “extremely complicated” challenges drivers face due to new on-board computer algorithms that manage energy deployment. Under current regulations, drivers no longer have direct control over when to deploy the 350kW of battery power. Instead, real-time computer systems learn how to best distribute energy to achieve the fastest lap times.

This automated approach means the system reacts to driver behavior; for instance, aggressive throttle input, oversteer, or heavy energy use during overtaking attempts are factored into the algorithm's calculations. Lawson noted that drivers are still learning how to optimize these systems eleven races into the season. He highlighted that certain actions can trigger bugs that exacerbate other issues, citing a difficult race at Spa as an example of these technical complications.
