Liam Thompson moves from Derby County to Mansfield Town

Derby County and Mansfield Town have reached an agreement on a fee for midfielder Liam Thompson, the 24‑year‑old academy graduate who has been with Derby since the 2021‑22 season. The transfer is expected to be completed before the close of the summer window, with Derby confirming they will not block the move as Thompson enters the final year of his contract.

Derby manager John Eustace indicated that Thompson’s first‑team opportunities will be limited after the club plans to strengthen its midfield, and the player was omitted from a recent pre‑season friendly. Mansfield Town view Thompson as a key addition to help push for promotion from League One. The deal follows earlier reports that the transfer had been delayed while Derby toured Austria.

The move provides Derby with a fee for a player who would otherwise have left on a free in 2027, and gives Thompson the chance for regular playing time.
