Charité opens BeCURE HIV research center in Berlin

The Charité hospital in Berlin has launched BeCURE, a new research center dedicated to finding cures or methods for long-term control of HIV and other viral diseases. The center includes the Brown-Kahlert Study Center and will integrate basic and clinical research with social behavioral studies and community involvement.

The opening coincides with the eleventh anniversary of the stem cell transplant of Thomas Kahlert, a 62-year-old Charité employee. Kahlert is one of only 13 people globally known to be cured of HIV. After being diagnosed with HIV in 2009 and later developing acute myeloid leukemia in 2015, he received a transplant from a healthy donor on October 14, 2015.

Unlike the first Berlin patient who had a donor with the Delta-32 mutation, Kahlert’s donor was heterozygous, possessing both the normal and the mutated CCR5 receptor. This allowed for a successful transplant that has left both HIV and cancer cells undetectable in his system. BeCURE director Christian Gaebler noted that insights from this research could potentially be applied to other chronic viral infections, such as Hepatitis B.
