LIAT Air flight returns to Guyana after engine emergency

A LIAT Air flight bound for Antigua made a safe emergency return to Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following an engine-related issue.

Flight 5L770, an Embraer ERJ-145 carrying 47 passengers, departed at approximately 11:55 a.m. About 30 minutes into the flight, the pilot declared an emergency by transmitting Squawk 7700. In response, airport emergency procedures were activated, and the Aerodrome Fire Service was placed on standby.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) coordinated the aircraft’s approach to ensure separation from other flights. The plane landed safely, and all 47 passengers disembarked without injury. LIAT technical personnel are currently assessing the aircraft to determine the specific cause of the engine problem.
