Libera warns of organized crime infiltration in Italian reconstruction efforts
The anti-mafia association Libera has raised alarms regarding what it describes as "corruptive earthquakes" involving organized crime infiltration in post-earthquake reconstruction projects in Central Italy. Following an investigation by the Guardia di Finanza, concerns have emerged regarding alleged links between the 'ndrangheta, the camorra, and the management of public resources intended for rebuilding.
The issue reportedly spans the regions of Marche, Umbria, and Abruzzo. Libera suggests that the 2016 earthquake created opportunities for criminal organizations to attempt to seize significant economic resources allocated for regional recovery. This sentiment is echoed by Giuseppe Busia, president of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (Anac), who noted the penetration of mafia elements into construction sites as a failure of existing control mechanisms.
To combat this, Libera is calling for a strategic shift focused on three pillars: transparency through integrated digitalization and traceability of administrative processes, increased civic monitoring involving citizens and the third sector, and greater political responsibility.
