Liberal Democrat MP Charlie Maynard resigns in bid to challenge Sir Ed Davey

Charlie Maynard, the Liberal Democrat MP for Witney, has resigned from his position as Treasury spokesman. The move is reportedly intended to trigger a vote of no confidence to remove party leader Sir Ed Davey.

Maynard has allegedly approached parliamentary colleagues to seek support for the leadership challenge. The resignation follows reported frustration regarding the party's polling performance, which recently showed the Liberal Democrats at 11% in a YouGov survey, slightly below their 2024 election share.

Several senior party figures have publicly defended Sir Ed Davey. Deputy leader Daisy Cooper stated that the “vast majority” of MPs support his leadership and expressed frustration with the distraction. Former leader Tim Farron also backed Davey, citing the historic election results achieved under his leadership.
