Liberal Democrats secure victories in UK local by-elections
The Liberal Democrats have secured key victories in recent local by-elections in England. In Mid Devon, Dr. Mary Ryan won the Bradninch ward seat on the Mid Devon District Council with 72.5 per cent of the total ballots cast. The vacancy was created following the resignation of former council leader Luke Taylor.
In Wiltshire, the Liberal Democrats maintained their control of the Wiltshire Council after successfully defending the Salisbury Milford seat. Despite a significant surge in Conservative support, which saw a 12.4 per cent increase in their vote share, the Liberal Democrats retained the seat with 45.6 per cent of the vote. The party currently holds 43 seats, bringing their total to 50 when combined with Independents, though analysts note their majority remains precarious.
