Liberal Party proposes laws to protect Australian flag and memorials

The Liberal Party of Australia has announced plans to introduce the Australian National Symbols and Heritage Protection Bill. The proposed federal legislation aims to criminalize the serious public desecration of the Australian National Flag and the vandalism of significant war memorials and historical monuments.

Under the proposed policy, individuals found guilty of reckless flag desecration intended to incite hatred could face up to 12 months in prison. The bill also seeks to establish federal criminal offenses for the defacement or destruction of public war memorials, addressing the current patchwork of varying state and territory laws.

Additionally, the Coalition intends to protect January 26 as Australia's national day within Commonwealth law. Any future changes to the date would require approval from the Australian public through a national plebiscite. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor defended the move as a way to re-establish trust with voters, denying claims that the policy is a political maneuver to compete with the One Nation party.
