Liberec Region mandates winter equipment on 18 road sections
Authorities in the Liberec Region have activated traffic signs requiring winter equipment on 18 specific road sections. The mandate primarily affects mountainous areas within the Krkonoše and Jizerské Mountains, including protected zones in the western Krkonoše.
While most affected routes are third-class roads, the requirement also extends to several second-class roads, such as the route from Rokytnice nad Jizerou to Vítkovice and onward to Horní Mísečky, as well as roads from Bílý Potok to Smědava and from Desná to Souš. Although the region is expanding salted road sections, the use of chemical de-icers is limited in protected natural areas, sometimes facing opposition from local mayors.
Maintenance for approximately 2,060 kilometers of second and third-class regional roads is managed by Silnice LK. About 56 kilometers of low-traffic third-class roads will remain without winter maintenance. Notably, the 6.5-kilometer road around the Souš reservoir in the Jizerské Mountains is closed during the first snowfall to protect the drinking water source, serving only cross-country skiers in winter.
