Liberi telecom center theft: Suspect arrested after risking municipal blackout

A 34-year-old man from the Naples area has been placed under house arrest after being caught by the Carabinieri attempting to steal electronic components from a Fibercop telecommunications center in Liberi, Italy.

The suspect was caught in the act of cutting and removing electronic strips containing precious metals, including palladium, platinum, gold, silver, and copper. The theft, which caused an estimated 100,000 euro in damages, threatened to cause a total blackout of telephone and internet services for the entire municipality.

The arrest followed an investigation by the Vitulazio Carabinieri station into a similar theft that occurred on September 28 in Bellona. Authorities were able to intercept the suspect and recover the stolen material, which has since been returned to the rightful owner.
