Liberia: Advocates call for justice and economic rights for women

In Monrovia, the Aiding Disadvantaged Women and Girls Association (ADWANGA) has launched a three-day conference focused on addressing the long-term effects of gender-based violence and strengthening public accountability in Liberia. The gathering aims to discuss how justice institutions can respond to harms caused by past conflicts, particularly as the nation works toward establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC). ADWANGA Executive Director Amelia M. Cooper emphasized that justice must include the restoration of dignity, access to support services, and practical reparations for survivors.

Simultaneously, the Women’s NGO Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) is calling for increased government action to support rural women. Executive Director Esther David Yango noted that while rural women are essential to food production, local economies, and community peacebuilding, they remain largely excluded from economic opportunities. Key barriers identified include limited access to land, financing, education, healthcare, and leadership roles. The call for reform coincides with the observance of the International Day of Rural Women.
