Liberia aims to return 250,000 children to classrooms by 2029

Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the ‘Back to My Classroom’ (BTMC) campaign, which aims to return 250,000 out-of-school children to education by 2029.

The initiative plans to enroll 80,000 children across seven priority counties by 2026. During a midterm review of the National Steering Committee, President Boakai emphasized that reintegrating children into the school system is a shared responsibility involving government, local authorities, families, and civil society.

Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah noted that addressing barriers such as poverty, distance, disability, and lack of birth documentation is essential for successful reintegration. The campaign has already expanded its model to include Gbarpolu and is working to strengthen national coordination and child-level tracking through an integrated approach involving health, gender, and social protection sectors.
