Liberia and Guinea restore calm at Sorlumba border crossing
The Liberian government has announced that calm has been restored along the border with Guinea following a recent standoff at the Sorlumba border crossing. The tension arose from a disagreement between a Guinean soldier and a Liberian security officer regarding the positioning of checkpoints.
Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah confirmed that officials from both nations met to resolve the immediate conflict through dialogue. While the immediate situation is contained, the government is pursuing diplomatic channels to address underlying boundary concerns permanently.
This incident follows a period of heightened tension in Lofa County. Reports indicate that since February, the border region has experienced incursions, troop deployments, and the removal of a Liberian flag by Guinean forces. While President Boakai has utilized tripartite summits and technical commissions to manage the dispute, local communities have expressed concerns regarding transparency and the impact of these territorial disagreements on residents.
