India and Liberia launch UN coalition to protect shipping and seafarers

India and Liberia have launched the ‘Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers’ at the United Nations Headquarters. The initiative, which has gained support from 25 other nations including France, Germany, Japan, and Russia, aims to strengthen the protection of commercial shipping and the personnel who crew it.

Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar condemned recent attacks on civilian vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf, and the Black Sea as ‘completely unacceptable’ and ‘indefensible.’ He highlighted several recent incidents involving Indian nationals, including the death of a sailor on the MV Cape Dove in the Gulf of Oman and the loss of four seafarers following an attack on the MV Golden Leo near Odesa.

The coalition intends to work within the frameworks of the International Maritime Organization and the International Labour Organization to improve operational standards and maritime security. The group focuses on three primary priorities: the safety of shipping, the security of maritime corridors, and the protection of seafarers.
