Liberia and Sierra Leone Presidents Issue Tough Anti‑Corruption and Crime Warnings

President Joseph Boakai of Liberia warned drug traffickers and anyone who believes wealth, influence or public office can place them beyond the reach of the law. Speaking at a judges and court marshals commissioning ceremony, he said his administration will pursue alleged criminals and that the courts must operate independently, without fear or favor. Boakai linked narcotics, organized crime and corruption to threats to the country’s youth, legitimate businesses, national security and Liberia’s international reputation, and praised Joint Security forces for recent drug seizures.

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone declared that no office, status or political affiliation will protect officials from lawful scrutiny as the nation enters a “Year of Action and Accelerated Delivery.” He described corruption and waste as direct threats to schools, health facilities, roads and other essential services, and announced a series of reforms, including reviews of the Public Financial Management Act and the rollout of an electronic government procurement system to strengthen oversight and reduce misuse of public funds.
