Liberia Deputy Speaker faces scrutiny over private estate amid housing crisis

An investigation has revealed that Liberia’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Thomas Fallah, is constructing a massive private estate in Johnsonville, Montserrado County. The development, which includes multiple duplexes, has drawn public scrutiny regarding the wealth of government officials amidst Liberia’s severe economic challenges, high unemployment, and widespread poverty.

Simultaneously, Liberia is facing a growing housing crisis characterized by rising rents and a lack of legal protections for tenants. Advocates are calling on the National Legislature to enact a Rent Control and Tenancy Law to regulate rent increases, advance payments, and evictions. There are also proposals for the establishment of a National Rent and Tenancy Commission to mediate disputes and provide a formal framework for landlord-tenant relationships.
