Liberia drug trafficking cases advance in court

Legal proceedings in Liberia involving high-profile drug trafficking and money laundering allegations have reached new stages in the Monrovia City Court.

Lawyers for former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor have withdrawn their request for a preliminary examination of evidence. The defense stated the decision followed the court's refusal to grant access to materials deemed necessary to challenge the state's case. The legal team indicated they prefer to proceed directly to trial, where pretrial discovery is guaranteed, rather than participate in a preliminary stage without full disclosure. The case involves allegations of money laundering and drug trafficking.

Simultaneously, former Liberia National Police Crime Services Commissioner Johnny Bolar Dean has been forwarded to court facing charges of criminal conspiracy, bribery, and obstruction of government functions. Investigators allege Dean received a US$10,000 payment from Stephanie Fefe Mensah to influence an active investigation into drug trafficking. While Dean reportedly admitted to receiving the funds, he claimed the money was provided for safekeeping and identified Mensah as his lover.
